Have you always wanted to get a piercing but could never decide on the right place? Then maybe the Medusa piercing will inspire you. More and more people are getting noticed on the street with it and there are already over 90,000 posts on Instagram with the hashtag #medusapiercing . What exactly is a Medusa piercing? A piercing on the philtrum, i.e. the groove between the upper lip and nose, usually in the form of a small silver ball.

The history buffs among you are probably wondering why this type of piercing was named after the terrifying Gorgon of Greek mythology. Who turned anyone who looked at her into stone. Well, unfortunately, nobody knows. What is known, however, is that in ancient times the philtrum, which means “love charm,” was considered particularly erogenous. We can understand that! Combined with bright red lipstick, the Medusa piercing can look quite seductive...
But before you rush off to the nearest tattoo studio and get that piercing. There are a few things you should know. We have put together an overview of the most important information for you here:
Cost of medusa piercing
How much you have to pay for the Medusa piercing depends on where you get it done. Prices can vary greatly: in some tattoo studios, you pay 35 euros for it, in others almost twice as much. Most of the time, however, you have to expect to pay 40 to 50 euros. The initial jewelry and aftercare products are usually included in the price.
Pains
There are a lot of nerves running along the philtrum, so a Medusa piercing is usually more painful than other facial piercings. How much it hurts depends on your pain sensitivity. Nevertheless, we advise against getting a Medusa piercing as your very first piercing. So try a piercing somewhere else first - a nose piercing, for example, is usually not as painful.
Cure of medusa piercing
The healing time for the Medusa piercing is between four and eight weeks. In the beginning, it is normal for the area to turn red and for the lips to be swollen for a few days. It can also happen that the gums turn blue and swell a little. However, if this does not change after about three days, you should go to your piercer and get advice. To make the healing as uncomplicated as possible, you should avoid cigarettes and alcohol for the first twelve to 24 hours after the piercing. It is also recommended that you do not eat any foods containing milk or fruit acid for the first two weeks.

Scar
If you don't like the Medusa piercing after all, or if you just can't stand the sight of it after a few years and want to remove it, you have to be aware that it will leave a small scar forever. But it's usually just a small spot that can easily be covered with concealer or foundation.
Risks
Of course, there are some risks that you need to be aware of before you decide to get a Medusa piercing. A common problem, for example, is that the stud can cause damage to the gums and tooth enamel. To avoid this, it helps to use a stud made of soft plastic. It is less common for the jewelry to grow together during the healing process. You also have to get used to eating with the Medusa piercing. Even applying lipstick can be a bit of a challenge at first.
