What is a dermal piercing?

In this article I will let you know What is a dermal piercing? A dermal piercing is of course always a very special and intimate piercing. Therefore, it is particularly important for women to have a piercer who they trust completely. A nipple piercing is worn by both women and men. In addition to the increased sexual arousal it causes, nipple piercings are also desired for aesthetic reasons  .

With a dermal anchor, a piercing is usually done through the areola, i.e. the outer nipple. It is also possible to have several different piercings done through the nipple in different directions and at different heights. Healing usually takes six weeks,  but in some cases it can take up to six months  .

Anyone who gets a nipple piercing should avoid wearing clothing that is too tight in the chest area while the piercing is healing. The piercing should also not be removed or replaced in the first few days after the piercing.

How is the dermal piercing usually pierced?

At first glance, the implantation appears to be extremely painful. For this reason,  a local anesthetic is  used in studios for a dermal anchor. Of course, the part of the body where the dermal anchor is to be placed is sterilized first. Then an incision is made . This means cutting through the skin and tissue. This cut is made with a scalpel. The piercer then separates the individual layers of skin and forms a pocket into which the anchor is inserted. But first a hole has to be punched with a dermal punch.

An attachment is then screwed on for the duration of the healing process. After that, discs or crystals are often chosen as the attachment. These reduce the risk of clothing getting caught on the dermal anchor.

The risks of a dermal piercing

With a dermal anchor, however, the wound can become contaminated or even infected more easily than with pure piercings. This is not least because a dermal anchor does not have a puncture channel, but rather a pocket of skin. For this reason, care products such as  skin creams or sun lotion should be avoided entirely on the affected part of the body.

These can flow into the wound and, in the worst case, even block it. As already mentioned, there is another risk, as with conventional piercings, of getting caught on the jewelry. It is therefore advisable to cover the fresh dermal anchor with a wound plaster. The plaster  not only provides protection, it also ensures that the plate does not slip. This would mean that the dermal anchor would grow together.

During the healing phase, the skin may change color . Swelling is also not uncommon during the healing process. When the dermal anchor is inserted, scarring may occasionally occur. In rare cases, blood poisoning has even been observed. The implant can grow out if it is rejected by the body. However, this does not pose any health risks. Anyone who takes good care of the dermal anchor and pays particular attention to it in the early stages will be rewarded with a wonderful result.

Which is the right jewelry?

The dermal piercing consists of an implant that is placed under the skin. Then you have the option of attaching a piece of jewelry or a threaded rod to it. They have a diameter of 3 mm to 6 mm. They are often used to give tattoos a more unusual style. The rods have a diameter of 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm. The wearer can attach attachments to them according to their individual ideas. The material should always be titanium or surgical steel 316L.

Dermal Piercing FAQ

How much does it cost to pierce a dermal anchor?

The cost of a dermal anchor also depends on the location chosen and is therefore on average  between 50 and 100 EUR . This piercing requires minimal intervention to sink the jewelry into the skin. This can be done using either a needle or punching. The latter method promotes faster healing, but the ingrowth into the skin is sometimes delayed.

Pain during dermal anchoring?

Although an incision in the skin is required to insert the anchor under the skin, no anesthesia is required,  so the pain is minimal . Since soft tissue is always used for insertion, the resistance during insertion is relatively low, which also limits the pain to a few seconds.

Dermal anchor inflamed?

If a dermal anchor has become infected, healing can be delayed if the piece of jewelry cannot be replaced by itself. In this case, it is therefore advisable to ask the piercer or a doctor for advice as soon as possible. During all activities such as renovations where the risk of infection with bacteria is increased, the piercing should always be covered with a plaster.
