What is a daith piercing?

The daith piercing is located on the horizontal bridge and the innermost curve of the auricle. It is a special piercing on the ear and is not as common as the piercing on the earlobe.

First, the area of skin that is to be pierced is disinfected accordingly. In the next step, the points on the auricle where the entry and exit will occur are marked. This is usually done with a pen. This point is then pierced with a piercing needle. A curved needle is often used so that the adjacent cartilage areas are not unnecessarily injured.

Many piercers also work with a receiving tube, which is a protective tube made of stainless steel. The receiving tube is held against the underside of the skin area to be pierced so that the needle first pierces the cartilage and then slides into the tube. This way, no surrounding tissue is damaged.

Punching is also recommended for this type of piercing to make the healing phase easier. Punching does not pierce the tissue on the ear but rather punches it out. This avoids the pressure that the jewelry that is later inserted could exert on the hard tissue.

A true-to-original daith piercing should give the impression that the lower part of the jewelry is protruding directly from the ear canal. Either a tiny ball closure ring or a barbell is suitable for inserting the jewelry. Barbells are also known as micro-barbels or micro-BCRs. Since the piercing is done in a particularly narrow and small place, it should only be performed by an experienced piercer with a great deal of sensitivity.

Risks of a Piercing

This piercing is one of the most painful cartilage piercings. The healing phase can last up to six months. During this time, absolute hygiene is important, otherwise, dangerous infections can occur.

An antiseptic cleaning product, which you can get from a pharmacy, can help prevent inflammation. Alternatively, you can use the ProntoLind spray, which you can buy directly from the shop or your piercer.

Which is the right jewelry?

The daith is a piercing that is supposed to help reduce migraine attacks. This has not yet been scientifically proven. However, some patients are sure to feel a change.

Currently, the heart motif is more popular than any other piercing than the Daith piercing. But the classic daith piercing rings are also very popular. Small ball closure rings, banana bells, smaller piercing rings, or short barbells are most commonly used.

Daith Piercing FAQ

How much does a daith piercing cost?

A professionally performed daith piercing costs between 40 and 60 EUR. Depending on the jewelry used and the size of the piercing channel, the piercing can either be pierced with a needle or punched. This removes the tissue and creates smoother wound edges that often only take half the time to heal.

Daith Piercing Pain?

The pain can be greater with a daith piercing than at other parts of the ear. This is because the small fold above the ear canal mostly comprises cartilage.  The pressure required for piercing is therefore higher, which also somewhat increases the pain sensation.

Is Daith piercing infected?

If a daith has become inflamed, it is important to avoid further pressure on the piercing and the inflammation. If the swelling is severe, the piercing should be removed and a longer one should be inserted if available. It is also advisable not to sleep on the affected side, as both the pressure and the heat can further promote the inflammation instead of allowing it to subside slowly.
