Nose piercings: From different types to care

Nose piercings: From different types to care

Nose piercings are one of the most common types of body jewelry, along with ear piercings . Small studs or rings in the nostrils are now completely socially acceptable and are not noticeable in everyday life. However, there are also other types of piercings that you can use to decorate your nose. In our big nose piercing guide, you can find out everything about the different ways in which nose piercings are done and what you should definitely bear in mind when caring for them afterwards.

What types of nose piercings are there and how are they done?

Nostril Piercing

The nostril piercing goes through the nostril and is one of the most well-known types of piercing. It can be pierced individually or in pairs next to each other, or worn on the left and right nostrils at the same time. Because this part of the body is criss-crossed by many nerve pathways, piercing is often perceived as painful.

Septum Piercing

The septum piercing is done through the connective tissue below the nasal septum. Before piercing, you should check carefully whether the piercing is really straight, because the nasal septum is often uneven. Fortunately, the tissue in this area is very thin and soft, so the procedure is usually not painful.

Bridge Piercing

The bridge piercing is located on the upper bridge of the nose and should only be done by really experienced piercers. Because important nerves run along the base of the nasal bone, the piercing is not without risk. Another difficulty is placing the piercing straight and in such a way that it does not restrict the wearer's field of vision.

Nasallang Piercing

The nasallang piercing is rather rare and runs through both nostrils and the nasal septum. It is therefore a combination of two nostrils and a septum with a long bar, which makes the piercing more interesting for experienced piercing wearers. It is important that all three piercings are in a line. They can be pierced at once or extended with existing piercings.

How is a nose piercings done?

Just like with ear piercings, many jewelers still offer the well-known nostril piercing. However, a visit to a reputable piercing studio is essential for a smooth piercing and healing process. After all, it is not without reason that the job of a piercer is a profession that requires proper training. At a jeweler, ear piercings or nose piercings are shot with a gun, which is a dangerous method because it often leads to infections . Firstly, the ear piercing guns cannot be cleaned sterilely, and the tissue is destroyed during the process, which also prolongs the healing process.

At the piercer, the area in question is first disinfected and the puncture point is then marked with a line. The puncture is then made using a cannula. This means the piercing is pierced particularly gently. So it is better to go to an experienced piercer than to a jewelry store.

What risks are there?

As long as the nose piercings are done in a professional and clean piercing studio, complications should not arise. The nostril in particular is one of the most uncomplicated types of piercing. The bridge, on the other hand, is a little more dangerous because it is pierced through a very sensitive area that is filled with blood vessels and nerves. If these are damaged, facial paralysis can occur in the worst case scenario. The right jewelry is also important to avoid allergic reactions. Recommended materials are titanium, PTFE or bio plast. According to an EU regulation, the jewelry must have a nickel content of less than 0.05 percent.

How long does it take to heal and how do I care for a fresh nose piercing?

The healing process not only depends on the pierced area, but also varies from person to person. It usually takes between four weeks and three months. After piercing, the area of the body is red and sometimes swollen. Light bleeding is also not unusual at the beginning.

With the right care, you can support the healing process and sometimes even speed it up. The most important thing is to touch the freshly pierced piercing as little as possible with your fingers - and if you do, then only with washed hands. You can clean the piercing twice a day with a mild, pH-neutral washing lotion, carefully soak the crusts that have formed and remove them with a cotton swab. The area around the piercing channel is then disinfected with products. In the first few weeks, make sure that no dirt or make-up gets into the wound. You should also avoid saunas and swimming pools during the healing phase.

What jewelry is available for nose piercings?

Studs are usually used as initial jewelry for nose piercings, except for the septum. This means that there is less friction on the wound than with rings, which move more in the piercing channel. Studs therefore promote the healing process. As soon as the piercing has healed, you can also use other jewelry. For the nostril, small rings or studs in various shapes are particularly popular. For the septum, there are horseshoe rings, segment rings or small barbell bars with two balls at the end, which are much more discreet than rings.

How much does a nose piercing cost?

How much a nose piercing costs varies from studio to studio and the type of piercing also determines the price. Complicated areas such as the bridge are usually more expensive than a conventional nostril. However, as a guideline, you should budget between 30 and 70 euros.
