At what age are piercings allowed for teenagers?

It is well known that nose piercing for teenagers does not always make decisions in line with their parents’ wishes. However, when the topic of piercings comes up, it is about more than a shirt that is too short or the time when the teenager should be home in the evening. Piercings are a difficult and serious topic that parents have to deal with, even if they don’t like it. What should parents know about piercings and how can they deal with them?

If you walk through the city today and look around carefully, you will notice that piercings are now part of normal body jewelry, just like necklaces and rings. Of course, you don’t have to follow every trend. But people have always attached jewelry to their bodies through piercings, even in ancient Egypt. And yet parents are reluctant to see their children follow this trend. But piercing jewelry is currently experiencing absolute hype.

Nose piercing only with parental consent?

If parents say a categorical “no” to their teenage children and are not prepared to have a reasonable conversation, this could have unforeseen consequences for their child. Out of spite, teenagers have done a lot of stupid things and even turned up at home with a piercing against their parent’s wishes. However, the piercing may have been done by an unreliable piercer who carries incalculable risks. So parents have no choice but to have an open conversation with their children. Discuss the pros and cons. Find a solution together.

At what age can teenagers get piercings?

According to the law, teenagers can be pierced from the age of 14, but only in the presence of their parents. Once the teenagers turn 16, written consent from the parents and their ID card are sufficient as proof. At the latest when your child is 18, they can do whatever they want. Reputable piercing studios adhere to these rules, but there will always be black sheep. The cost of a piercing varies depending on where on the body it is done. Nose and ear piercings are available from around €20, while eyebrow or belly button piercings start at around €60.

If parents take the step and allow their child to have a piercing, they usually restrict it to the nose or ears. A further step would be the eyebrows and belly button. Very few parents allow their children to have piercings on the tongue, lip, or in the intimate area. Find a reputable piercing studio

Help your child find a reputable studio. Ask around carefully, visit a piercing fair, or ask others about their experiences. A good piercing studio is hygienic. They also provide detailed advice, which also covers the risks and aftercare in detail. No piercing without a signature! Get advice from different studios. Piercings at events or parties are an absolute no-no. A good piercing studio is usually a little more expensive, but also safer because the professionals working there have the appropriate training and are also familiar with anatomy and the necessary hygiene. They only use special piercing jewelry made of surgical steel, platinum, or gold and do not cause allergies.

What risks can exist with piercing jewelry?

It is not unfounded and entirely justified that parents fear for their children’s health when getting a piercing. Not only can the healing process be lengthy and painful if it becomes infected, but infectious diseases such as hepatitis B and C caused by unsterile instruments are also serious. The subsequent damage caused by injuries to the nerve pathways can also be extremely serious. Examples of problematic situations include chewing and speech disorders with tongue piercings, eyelid disorders with eye piercings, nerve disorders in the genitals, or, with nipple piercings, the blockage of the milk ducts due to scars. It is therefore worth considering very carefully where the piercing should be placed. If in doubt, ask a doctor!

Make sure that only high-quality piercing jewelry is used and that your child keeps the piercing site clean!

If you give your consent to a piercing, give your child a week to sleep on the decision. If parents and teenagers are still sure, the piercing studio you trust will still be happy to welcome you and your child. It’s not worth regretting it afterwards, because the scars will remain forever.
