AFTERCARE FOR EAR PIERCING: 9 TIPS TO PROMOTE THE HEALING PROCESS
If you have just had earrings injected, aftercare is an important part of the healing process. Hygiene plays an important role. That’s why we’ve put together 9 tips for you that can help you get through the healing process well.
CARING FOR NEW EAR PIERCINGS? WASH YOUR HANDS REGULARLY
It is important to clean your hands thoroughly before touching your ears. Wash your hands with warm water and soap before touching your ears. Regular hand washing reduces the risk of transferring bacteria to your freshly pierced ears.
CLEAN YOUR JEWELRY
If you want to put new jewelry in your ear holes, you must clean them well beforehand. The best way to clean this jewelry is with a mild, unscented soap and a water solution.
Use a cotton swab to clean your jewelry. It is also advisable to regularly clean the earrings that the jeweler puts in your ears. You can clean these earrings with a cotton swab and remove dried dirt and scabs.
If you have cleaned the earrings with soap and water, it is important to remove any soap residue before putting the earrings back in.
CLEANING/DISINFECTING EARRING HOLES
Although disinfection is very important, do not over-disinfect your ear piercings. If you disinfect too much, you can slow down the healing process of your caries.
If you want to clean the holes, the best way to do so is with a saltwater solution. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water and dab your ears with a clean cotton swab. Do not use cotton swabs to clean the holes as this can leave lint behind and is not conducive to healing.
TO TWIST OR NOT TO TWIST EARRINGS?
In the past, it was often recommended to rotate the earrings regularly after new holes were made. This was recommended to prevent the earrings from getting stuck in the holes. However, this is now really outdated and is no longer recommended.
It is advisable to touch the earrings as little as possible, especially during the healing process. Twisting your earrings can cause micro-tears in the skin. These micro-tears can affect the healing process.
STAY AWAY FROM IRRITANTS
You mustn’t use hair products, lotions, perfumes, or other irritants during the healing process. Good to know when taking jewelry on vacation.
If these get close to the freshly shot holes, they can cause irritation and inflammation, so try to use them as little as possible or cover your ears tightly before using them.
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHOICE OF CLOTHING
You must choose clothing that does not pull or rub excessively on your ears during the healing process. A wool sweater, for example, can very quickly get stuck behind your earrings, which is not conducive to healing.
CAN YOU SWIM IF YOU HAVE JUST HAD YOUR EARS PIERCED?
During the healing process, you mustn’t allow too much water and moisture near your cavities. Avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, lakes, and other bodies of water.
It is also advisable to avoid steam, saunas, and steam baths. Of course, you can take a shower, but be careful not to leave any shampoo or other soap residue on your ear.
WHEN CAN YOU CHANGE EARRINGS?
When you can change your earrings after piercing depends on how quickly your ears heal. Generally, it is recommended that you leave the original studs or ulcer buttons in place for at least six weeks.
This is the average time it takes for the ear to heal. It is important not to remove the earrings during this time so as not to disturb the healing process. So after how many weeks are you allowed to change earrings? The answer is: after six weeks. Do you want to change your earrings after 4 weeks? If so, we do not recommend this at Minitials.
SLEEPING WITH FRESHLY SHOT EARRINGS
You mustn’t apply any direct pressure to your ear piercings after the piercings are done. For example, consider sleeping with freshly pierced earrings with your ear piercings resting on the pillow.
This direct pressure can cause an interruption in the healing process, so it is recommended to lie on your back or stomach to avoid excessive pressure on the ears.
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU WEAR EARRINGS OR STUDS?
It is recommended to wear stud earrings or ulcer buttons for at least six weeks after the holes are pierced. This is the average time it takes for the ear to heal. It is important not to remove the earrings during this time so as not to disrupt the healing process.
After this period, the studs or ulcer buttons can be replaced with other earrings. In addition to these 6 weeks, we recommend not wearing heavy earrings for at least 12 months.
HOW LONG DOES IT DRIP AFTER THE HOLES ARE PIERCED?
After having new holes pierced in your ears, it is important to take good care of them. You can do this with an after-piercing lotion, which you can use as early as 24 hours after the piercing.
It is important to do this twice a day and always with clean hands. Apply a drop of lotion to the ear hole and gently rotate the earring. This routine should be maintained for as long as you wear the Shooting Earrings, which is at least six weeks. After these six weeks, the holes will have healed and you can replace the Shooting Earrings.
IS PAIN NORMAL AFTER PUTTING IN AN EARRING?
After having earrings inserted, it is normal to experience some mild pain and tenderness. This may be accompanied by a temporary tingling and a slight burning sensation at the earring site. Your ears may be a little tender for the first few days after insertion, but this usually does not last longer than 3 days.
However, if you notice severe pain, significant redness, or swelling around the earrings, this may indicate inflammation, in which case it is advisable to seek advice from a general practitioner.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR EARS ARE SORE AFTER A PIERCING?
If your ear piercings show signs of infection, it is important to see a doctor and clean the hole well. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain, warmth, and discharge that is an unusual color or smell. Will the piercing hurt a lot? Then we recommend removing the earring.
You mustn’t experiment with creams and ointments yourself. This can make the inflammation worse, so there is a risk of scarring. Therefore, always seek professional help in case of inflammation.
Remember that everyone goes through a different healing process, so some people may take longer than others. If you don’t trust them, you can always contact the piercer or jeweler who did your piercings.
