General
When piercing, your skin is pierced through all three layers of skin. When the skin is injured, microorganisms can enter the wound. The sterile working methods in our studio protect you as much as possible from contamination of the wound during the piercing. On the other hand, the everyday stresses of fresh piercing such as sweat, dirt on clothing, or touching the wound with dirty hands allow all kinds of bacteria to enter the injured skin area. It is therefore essential that you carefully follow our instructions for aftercare.
General healing times: 3 weeks to 8 months, depending on the piercing and body part.
Hygiene
Make sure to keep the fresh piercing clean. After all, it is an open wound that can become infected if hygiene is poor. In the first week, please always make sure that your hands are freshly washed or disinfected or that you wear disposable gloves when caring for your piercing.
Wound Treatment General
- Wound treatment should be carried out twice a day, if possible in the morning and evening.
- Only use the product recommended by the piercing studio.
- Always clean your hands before treating a wound and, if possible, disinfect them.
Precautions General
- Avoid contamination of any kind. During the healing period, only touch the piercing with clean fingers (high risk of infection).
- Avoid strenuous physical activity.
- No excessive consumption of alcohol or other intoxicants.
- No contact with water in outdoor or indoor pools with the pierced part of the body for the first 4 weeks.
- No sauna, solarium, or steam bath in the first 4 weeks.
- Use PH-neutral products when showering.
- No sexual contact at the pierced area until it heals.
- Do not expose any foreign body fluids to or near the piercing site until it has healed.
- Avoid friction caused by clothing that is too tight.
- Avoid pressure and tension.
- Do not play with the piercing.
- It is strongly advised not to remove the piercing jewelry during the healing period.
- Do not change care products or methods without consulting a piercer.
- Be careful when handling cosmetics such as body lotion or make-up.
General Tips
When it comes to daily personal hygiene, you should make sure that you don’t get caught on the fresh piercings, as this can have a negative effect on the healing process and in most cases also leads to pain. Adhering to the care routine and attending check-up appointments are important points in order to achieve good wound healing.
Piercings should be included in personal hygiene and cleaned even after healing. Deposits on piercing jewelry can lead to renewed inflammation of the pierced area of the body.
It is helpful to support your body in wound healing by reducing stress, getting plenty of sleep, eating a healthy diet and not doing much physical activity.
Normal healing process
Microorganisms can enter the wound when the skin is injured. The sterile working methods in our studio protect you as much as possible from contamination of the wound during the piercing. On the other hand, the everyday stresses of the fresh piercing such as sweat, dirt on clothing or touching the wound with dirty hands allow bacteria of all kinds to enter the injured skin area. The body reacts to such changes in its outer protective layer with various symptoms:
- Slight redness of the skin
- slight warming around the injured skin area
- Mild bleeding and fluid secretions
- slight pulling and burning
- swelling
These symptoms are no reason to panic. The body is simply starting to activate its defense mechanisms to support the body’s wound healing.
The skin is protected from bacteria by an acid mantle, which is also known as the body’s antibiotic. However, since this protective mantle has been breached by the piercing, the body also produces phagocytes. These cells destroy the invading microorganisms. The resulting cellular waste is known as pus and comes out of the wound as a waste product (phagocytosis).
The use of a care product supports the body’s wound healing.
Worrying healing process
Signs of a worrying course may be:
massive increase in secretions
- severe and increasing pain
- high fever and flu-like symptoms (as a sign of a serious infection)
- heavy bleeding
- strong foul smell
- Discoloration in the greenish-brownish-orange
What do I do if I have problems?
If complications arise, please contact the piercing company that performed the procedure immediately. If this is not possible, we recommend visiting a doctor or another piercing studio. In most cases, inquiries about complications by phone or email are difficult to answer, as a personal visit is the only way to determine the exact problem and achieve the best possible outcome for the customer.
We strongly advise against self-diagnosis and removing the jewelry without consulting a piercing professional. The first time you should change your jewelry, you should go to a piercing studio. There you can learn how to handle the piercing correctly and also what size jewelry you need.

Mouth area
Proper handling of care and care products
Thoroughly clean your hands before starting the treatment, and disinfect your hands if possible. Carefully and thoroughly clean the pierced area and the jewelry using the care product provided and thoroughly rinse your mouth. The cleaning process can be repeated depending on the level of dirt.
After cleaning, the care product is applied again. This should not be removed now but should be allowed to work into the wound. Please only apply a light film of care at the end, as excessive use can also have a negative effect on wound healing. The care product should be applied morning and evening until the wound has healed.
The individual wound treatment will be discussed again at the prescribed check-up appointments. To reduce swelling, small ice cubes should also be sucked several times a day, as regular cooling leads to a faster reduction in swelling in the mouth area.
Normal healing process
In contrast to all other piercing sites, the tongue consists of longitudinal and transverse muscle fibers. The injury to the muscle tissue during piercing causes the tongue to swell. In some cases, even the lymph vessels in the neck area swell.
Additional precautions
In most places in the oral area, jewelry that is too long is used when piercing. For this reason, special care must be taken during the healing period to ensure that the teeth or mouth are not injured when eating or speaking. Please therefore observe the following precautions in addition to those described under “General precautions”:
- Do not smoke at all for two hours and then as little as possible until the wound has healed.
- Keep saliva or other body secretions away from the wound.
- Reduce consumption of dairy products, and avoid spicy or highly acidic foods or drinks.
- It is best to eat soft foods and, if possible, rinse your mouth after eating.
- Please do not use antibacterial mouthwashes such as Listerine, Hexoral, or similar in excess, as these can destroy the natural bacterial flora in the mouth. These bacteria are needed for healing in the oral flora.
Special features of the tongue
After the tongue piercing, the tongue can be cooled with ice cubes.
The ice cubes should preferably be made from camomile/sage tea, as these have healing properties for mucous membranes. Liquid sugar can be used to sweeten the tea. Do not use crystalline sugar, as the crystals do not dissolve completely and this can lead to friction on the tongue when sucking the ice cubes, or the sugar crystals can get into the fresh wound.
Since the tongue swells after piercing in most cases, an overly long rod is used. Since the tongue has subsided, the overly long rod can cause injuries to the teeth or mouth when eating or speaking, it is very important to replace the rod with one that is the right size for the tongue after it has healed.
peculiarities of Lippe
When applying makeup for a lip piercing, care must be taken to ensure that no makeup gets onto the pierced area.
Since the lip can swell slightly after piercing, an extra-long labret is used. After the lip has gone down in swelling, the overly long bar can cause injuries to the teeth or mouth when eating or speaking, so it is very important to replace the labret with a bar that fits the lip after it has healed.
Special features of the lip band
Constantly playing with the ring with your tongue will encourage the jewelry to grow out. The ring should not rub against your teeth. It is recommended to use flattened balls, as these do not create pressure points on the neck of the tooth.
Intimate area
Proper handling of care and care products
The care product should be applied over a large area and left to work for about 1 minute so that dried deposits on the skin or on the jewelry can be removed. If the jewelry is too dirty, it should be carefully removed. Make sure that a lint-free disposable cloth or cotton swab is used for cleaning.
Cleaning is always done from the inside out so that the dirt is transported away from the wound and not towards it. The cleaning process can be repeated depending on the degree of dirt. The jewelry should be moved as little as possible during cleaning.
After cleaning, the care product is applied again. This should not be removed now, but allowed to dry on the skin without wiping. The care product will penetrate the edges of the wound and support wound healing. Please only apply a light film of care at the end, as excessive application can also have a negative effect on wound healing.
The treatment should be applied in the morning and evening during the healing period, but not for longer than 14 days. After this, the individual wound treatment will be discussed again at the previously agreed follow-up appointment.
precautionary measures
The following things apply generally to all piercings and should be avoided until the piercing has healed, as they can lead to complications in wound healing:
No sexual contact at the pierced area until it heals.
Do not expose any foreign body fluids to or near the piercing site until it has healed.
peculiarities of men
In the case of piercings that go through the urethra, care should be taken to ensure that the man sits down when using the toilet. The piercing changes the flow of urine.
